Hello, Enso archers!

After our winter hiatus, we’re excited to welcome everyone back to the range. Whether you’re picking up a bow for the first time or dusting it off after a break, this is the perfect time to connect with an archery practice.

We’ll start this month going over the fundamentals—form, safety, and mindset—building confidence from the very first shot. We’ll ease back into regular practice with drills to teach and refresh technique, stabilize our shots, and gain or regain consistency.

What to Expect This Month:

Form & Technique Refresh
Before we jump into longer distances or advanced drills, we’ll focus on the core fundamentals of a strong shot process. We’ll review the steps to each archery shot, such as:
• Stance & Posture – Finding a stable base for a consistent shot.
• Grip & Hand Placement – Ensuring a relaxed but firm hold to avoid torque.
• Anchor Point & Release – Developing muscle memory for repeatability.
• Follow-Through – Keeping the shot smooth and steady after release.
• Drill: Blank Bale Shooting – Focussing purely on form without the distraction of aiming at specific targets.
Check out our 2024 article series for an in-depth look at each of the USAA 11 Steps to Archery Shooting.

Strength & Stability Drills
Archery requires not just accuracy but physical endurance and control. Your instructor may incorporate or suggest exercises designed to build the muscles that support your draw and hold:
• Bow Holds – Holding full draw for 10–15 sec to strengthen shoulders and back.
• Stretch Band Work – Simulating a smooth draw with resistance bands.
• Core & Balance Drills – Including single-leg stance shots to improve stability.
• Challenge: 10-Second Hold & Release – Hold full draw for 10 seconds, then release. This builds endurance and control over your shot execution.
Check out our series of simple archery stretches for more suggested exercises.

Mindset & Focus Training
A steady shot starts not just in the body, but in the mind. We’ll work on mental techniques that help with confidence, consistency, and staying calm under pressure:
• Breathwork Drills – Syncing your breath with your shot cycle.
• Visualization Exercises – Mentally rehearsing each shot before execution.
• Slow-Motion Shooting – Breaking the shot down into deliberate, mindful steps.
• Drill: Breath & Release Timing – Inhale, draw, hold for 3 seconds, exhale, and release on a controlled out-breath. This improves shot rhythm and relaxation.

Classes will be in the Cedar Dojang (covered deck) until we have favourable weather and adequate light to move to the field range. Regular classes are offered Thu & Fri @ 5:30 – 6:30pm and Thu @ 6:45 – 7:45pm.

We’re looking forward to seeing you all and kicking off an incredible season.
