Started in 2008, by the NIH (National Institutes of Health) and its departments the NCCIH (National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health) and ORS (Office of Research Services), the aim of this month is to raise awareness of the benefits of yoga – such as mental & physical well-being, stress reduction, and increased energy.

A few common styles of Yoga:

Hatha – classic, traditional style, all about basics – Students will flow through postures holding for a few breaths each. This style helps with strength, flexibility, relaxation, and mental concentration using postures and pranayama (breathing exercises) to strengthen the mind-body connection.

Vinyasa – more active style with movement linked to breath – Instructors will choreograph a sequence of back-to-back postures with transitions coordinated to inhalations and exhalations. This style helps with strength, dynamic flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness.

Aerial – off-the-mat style – Students use a silk hammock suspended from the ceiling to support their body through the postures and sequences. The hammock allows students to take pressure off of the head, arms, or ankles during some postures while allowing for a greater range of motion in others.

Hot Yoga – performed in a 100-degree room, often with increased humidity – Depending on the studio, this may be the Bikram series of 26 postures (each performed 2 times) or sequences created by the instructor. The sauna-like room makes these classes a bit more intense while allowing your muscles to relax more into the postures.

Yin Yoga – more meditative style – Instructors lead students through a series of passive postures that are held several minutes in order to target the release of tension in deeper connective tissues and fascia.
Often supported by props – blocks, bolsters, and/or pillows, students strive to achieve a state of mindful stillness.

At Enso Center, our Elemental Yoga program is a blend of Hatha Yoga, Meditation, and
Pranayama, designed to increase physical health, flexibility, strength, and balance while improving confidence and mental peace.

Our instructors focus on the health of the whole person with a series of relaxed breathing and movement exercises. It is practiced slowly, with an emphasis on healthy joints and movement.

Classes are Mon – Fri 5pm
